Q: What type of services does the YWCA Oklahoma City provide?
A: We are dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice and dignity for all. In addition, we are the only certified shelter providing services and programs to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
Q: Is the YWCA only for women?
A: While our shelter is for women and their children; we also provide assistance to men by safety planning in domestically abusive situations.
Q: How many people do you serve?
A: In 2014, YWCA advocates, counselors, nurses, prevention education and outreach specialists provided lifesaving services to over 24,045 individuals. We served 3,081 clients directly and an additional 20,964 individuals through our crisis hotlines, prevention education and outreach efforts.
Q:When was the YWCA Oklahoma City founded?
A: We were founded in 1907 with 600 charter members and an annual budget of $6,688.70. 91 years later, in 1998, the Gaylord Hand in Hand Learning Center opened in April primarily to serve children of YES! and Passageway. In 2001 the YWCA SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program for Oklahoma County established as collaborative partnership with Oklahoma City, Midwest City and Edmond Police Departments; Oklahoma District Attorney; and Midwest Regional, Integris Baptist and Integris Southwest Medical Centers.
Q: Do you provide health and fitness programs?
A: Currently, the YWCA Oklahoma City does not provide fitness classes.
