Statement of Solidarity on the death of George Floyd

YWCA Oklahoma City is stunned and heartbroken at the death of George Floyd. His last words, “I can’t breathe” echo the death of Eric Garner at the hands of officers with the New York Police Department. George Floyd, who was known as a “gentle giant” had his life taken from him in broad daylight by three Minneapolis police officers on May 25, 2020.
It is up to those in a position of power and privilege to learn, educate others, and to stand in solidarity with people closest to the pain. While the actions of the Minneapolis police officers are horrendous, they serve as a constant reminder that “racism isn’t simply a question of attitude; it is a question of power.”
May George and his loved ones find the justice and peace they deserve.
