YWCA Oklahoma City Statement onf the sentencing of Derek Chauvin
YWCA Oklahoma City believes the sentence handed down to Derek Chauvin, the person convicted of committing second degree murder in the killing of George Floyd, long-awaited and necessary. As an organization whose mission is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, we hope it sends a clear message to other victims of police brutality in our country that excessive use of force will not be tolerated.
Our sympathies go out to the Floyd Family, the witnesses who courageously fought to intervene, and all others who were so tragically impacted by the crimes committed against George Floyd.
We also want to commend those members of law enforcement who testified the actions of Derek Chauvin, in their mind, were offensive, met the criteria for excessive force and were outside the standard training officers receive. It is vital that when people who are sworn to protect and serve our citizens commit bad acts, that other members of law enforcement condemn that behavior.
